This was my first book off of some list called "1000 books you must read". At first the description made it sound like something I wouldn't be very interested in, but it was a pretty fun listen. Two feuding turn-of-the-20th-century magicians (prestidigitators) who both think they're the best and are both trying to figure out the other's secret. It's a combination mystery/sci-fi. I think the author was going for a little bit of horror, too, but I didn't catch any of it. I had sort of guessed at the two main secrets before the end of the book, but was never sure. My only complaint was that the book ended too abruptly and left some major questions unanswered. But I guess that's also the mark of a good book!
