Series: Tales of Alvin Maker
I thought I'd like anything by Orson Scott Card, but I guess he doesn't always do science fiction. Still, I tried really hard to get into this novel that's more fantasy than sci-fi, and I really couldn't do it. Near the end things picked up enough to get me thinking I might continue the series, but this really isn't my typical genre I enjoy.
It's set in an alternate American history and deals a lot with people's "knacks" or certain powers they have. The arrogant pastor of the town decries things other characters have experienced for real as either mad superstition or devilry, while he himself is being deceived by something more sinister than anything he is decrying.
