So... not quite what I was expecting - more answers and a continued story in the Rama universe. This pair of books starts out between the first and 2nd Rama books and then only at the 88% mark of the 2nd book comes back to a familiar setting. Essentially, it's a parallel story to Rama.
As many negative reviews claim, you have to get past some of the nonexistent science in the book and just accept some things. After that, it's a pretty good story that moves along pretty quickly. Very similar to the Rama series there are large time jumps that would be nice to have filled out with more detail, but the story itself is pretty complete.
