The Secular Creed: Engaging Five Contemporary Claims - Rebecca McLaughlin
Though some in my Colson Fellows cohort had some opposing views to this, I thought it was a really good look at 5 of the common creed-type sayings that are posted in front yards / on signs / etc that many Christians just either roll their eyes at, ignore, or outright deride.
- Black Lives Matter - yes, because they matter to Jesus. Not because some people think they don't.
- Love is love - God is love; our knowledge of that as seen through different kinds of relationships is merely a glimpse
- Gay-rights movement is the new Civil-rights movement - Just because one group was marginalized doesn't align them with every other group that is. More black American are against gay rights than white Americans...how does that make sense if the two are connected?
- Women's rights are human rights - this only makes sense if there's something special about being human. If we're no different than animals, this sentiment is meaningless
- Transgender women are women - this completely erodes the meaning of the word woman. It not only confuses language, it resurrects and reinforces historical sexually-discriminatory stereotypes.
